The album was recorded live at the University of South Florida (April 29, 2015) and was the premier performance of The Emotional Suite, a 7-part suite for Jazz Quintet composed by Zachary Bornheimer.
From the program notes:
This suite is a labor of love and addiction–nearly a year in the making. Each movement is based on the emotional sensations of poetry in Japanese poetic forms. Lush chamber music at times and an exploration into tension at others, the goal of this music is to hypnotize the mind and take the listener through an emotional journey.
The poetry unites to tell a story of a child trying to cope with the trauma of psychological abuse–exploring the emotions at various points in the child’s life. The poetry was written by Zach Bornheimer using the Japanese poetic forms Tanka, Chōka, and Haiku.
